We would love to build an Iron Age roundhouse as a community building, with and for young people in Rutland and surrounding counties.
We have had this big ambition for our young people and community in Rutland for a long time. We have been discussing and dreaming up a collaboration of many of the skilled craftspeople and those whom we know with particular knowledge that can benefit our young people.
We embrace learning that is multi-sensory, hands on and immersive as we appreciate that there is great impact in participating in kinesthetic activity to embed understanding. School children often don’t have the time in the curriculum to delve into the details of their interests. We understand that learning by doing as is done in Forest School, can allow the freedom for deep learning and understanding.
The project comes in two parts. First, the building construction, where children and young people from Rutland schools, clubs, home education, youth groups from the wider community, would be able to participate in the creation of an historically inspired, educational and community building. And secondly, once built, the roundhouse will be a place for learning, personal development, school visits, historical workshops, archery, story-telling, yoga, wellbeing workshops. It’s potential is endless.
During the making of the Roundhouse, local crafts-people will be sharing their knowledge of this heritage building, coppicing, tree surgery, and living history. The building will continue to be a hub of learning and a destination for children’s and community education programmes.
The project offers many opportunities to bring well-being to
all, through the nature connection, hands-on sensory work, purposeful work and taking part in the construction. Children and people of all ages will need time and nurture after the Pandemic, to rebuild relationships and find common bonds with new insights and renewed values. This project offers the creation of a community with a common cause, a sense of belonging and deeper connection with the space and the people they shared that with.
